In this Sunday’s sermon, Fr. Micah focuses on the life of St. Peter, whom we hear about in today’s Gospel reading.
Christ tells St. Peter, a lifelong fisherman, to take his boat to deeper water and cast the net. Though this doesn’t make sense to St. Peter, who hadn’t caught anything all night long, he trusts Christ and obeys. The nets become so full that the boats begin to sink, and Peter says to Christ, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.”
In this story, St. Peter starts with faith, then is filled with wonder, then responds with humility. Fr. Micah encourages us to follow this pattern, the same pattern that Moses, Abraham, King David, Isaiah, and many more exemplified throughout the Scriptures.
Fr. Micah also emphasizes St. Peter’s willingness to give up everything, even his life, to follow Christ. He likens him to the good merchant in Christ’s parable of the pearl of great price.
May we have trust, experience wonder, be humble, and follow Christ as St. Peter did.
